Since we are officially on lockdown day 729,273,634 (or at least it feels like it), it’s hard to make nights at home feel special or romantic. But with a little creativity, there are lots of different activities couples can do together to make a change from a normal night in. A romantic home date night is possible on any budget, with free ideas or an early investment which provides fun for years to come.
Is romance reserved for Valentine’s Day?
There are people who go the full nine yards on Valentine’s Day and those, like me, who just do something low key if anything. I’m a true believer that romance doesn’t need an excuse. Date nights are an easy way to make time at home together extra special, without breaking the budget.
These romantic date night ideas are super simple and easy to do at home any time of the year (not just valentine’s!), with a twist on normal activities to make them fun!

Dine around the world
Take your pallets on an adventure around the world with a different cuisine for every meal. Breakfast in Paris with crepes, lunch in Berlin with currywürst, dinner in Naples with pizza, and dessert in Madrid with churros. How incredible does that sound!
Romantic movie night in
Clear the living room floor and lay down blankets and comfy cushions in front of the TV. If you don’t have a TV ideal for a movie marathon, for under £80 you can pick up a portable projector with screen (like this one on Amazon). The ultimate movie night, and you can enjoy this gadget for years to come at home or even outside during those warm summer nights.
Order in your favourite treats and snacks. If you want to be really authentic, you can buy traditional cinema tubs, pick ‘n’ mix bags and retro sweets on Amazon!
My favourite romantic movies are About Time, A Good Year, The Note Book, Valentine’s Day and Five Feet Apart. If romance isn’t your thing, read 25 Happy & Hilarious Films to Really Uplift Your Mood.
Wine tasting night
Pick a selection of wines from around the world or choose a region to virtually tour with wines from different vineyards – such as South Africa’s Wine Route. Opt for mini bottles for a cheaper way to try many varieties. If you really want to splash out on your home date night, how about a virtual experience? Waitrose offer virtual wine tastings, so you can learn about the wines from the comfort of your couch.
Take an evening virtual yoga class
Yoga can be an intense workout, but equally classes can be designed to relax the body and mind. Lay out your mats, light some candles, dim the lights and put on a playlist of soft music in the background – like this one on Spotify. If you don’t want to pay to view a live class, find thousands of brilliant tutorials on YouTube.

Get cosy by the fire… pit
Fire pits are a great way to enjoy outside space in the winter. Snuggle up together under a blanket and toast marshmallows on the fire to dip in melted chocolate. Hot dogs are a great dinner choice, as you can warm up the rolls over the fire first (always make sure sausages are thoroughly cooked through). Whilst you’re sitting beneath the stars, use the StarView Lite free app to virtually explore the Milky Way.
Bonus tip – if you have a slow cooker, pop it on a low heat to keep mulled wine or hot chocolate warm for top ups throughout the evening.

Cook at the table
Cook at the table… is she mad? One of the most fun ways to have dinner is by cooking on a Raclette. A one time purchase for years of fun, easy to order online like this one from amazon for about £65. Better yet, they generally serve 6-8 people, so are perfect for dinner parties (when they are allowed!). You can cook starter, main and dessert raclette style! My favourite dessert is biscuits with mini marshmallows and chocolate buttons melted under the grill – divine.
Try each others hobbies
Swap hobbies for the day! Think of your favourite hobbies and passions and plan those activities for your partner. If you like painting, set your partner up with a painting station and item to paint – and visa versa. Are they a gamer? Play a PlayStation game on your own or together. If you love to cook, challenge them to cook tonights dinner whilst you try out their favourite hobby. Maybe you will learn something about your partner.
Bring the spa to you
Is there anything more romantic than a massage from your partner? Relax and unwind with aromatherapy massage oils, like this one by Neal’s Yard Remedies. Light your favourite scented candles and take turns. Follow with face masks for your skin type, whilst listening to some guided meditation or soothing music.
