Have you suddenly found yourself with a lot of free time on your hands? Worried staying indoors will drive you stir crazy? As the world fights against coronavirus, billions of people across the globe are asked to stay at home. There are a lot of ideas and resources on the internet for families to keep children entertained, but what about fun activities for us millennials?
I’ve compiled a list of my favourite free/affordable fun activities and ideas for adults to, not just kill time, but really make the most of it. If, like me, your fully grown other half has dug out their old playstation and is now hogging the TV, you will especially appreciate these TV free ideas.

Treasure Hunt
No children? No problem. All you need is an isolation buddy and you can get treasure hunting. Make normal day to day treats into a treasure hunt for extra fun. That bottle of wine you have been waiting to open tonight, you have to find it first! Alternatively buy each other a surprise treat, and make a treasure hunt for the other to find it in the house or garden.

Launch a blog
If you’ve got access to a computer, you can start a blog. It’s as simple as that. You don’t need any knowledge, just a willingness to learn and be patient with yourself. So why start blogging? Having a blog means you will never have “nothing to do” ever again! Blogging can be a full time job or a weekend hobby, depending on what you would like to gain. Whether merely a creative outlet or a potential income stream, blogging is a rewarding way to up-skill yourself and fill your new found spare time.
So what to do next? To get started you will need a hosting company to host your WordPress site. There are many to choose from so it is worth doing some research, but my preference based on my own research and experience, is Lyrical Host. A UK based hosting company specialising in beautiful blogs!

Lego and jigsaw puzzles
Often assumed to be for the very young or very old, but a good puzzle is highly underrated. And Lego is – well the greatest toy ever invented. I dug out my old lego sets from the loft and had hours of fun building an electric Eurostar Train Set. Complete with petrol station and road crossing – of course.
Fun activities which require thought and logic like puzzles and building games are a great way to keep our minds busy in stressful times. I found building the train quite therapeutic after a hard day working from home.
Finally finish a book!
I love reading, but when I am busy, I get part way through a book and never return to it. If this sounds like you too, then you will be equally as excited as me, for the beautifully mixed feeling of joyous accomplishment and sadness experienced as you turn the final page of an epic novel.
Better yet, join a free online virtual book club. My favourite is Beth’s Book Club on Facebook, owned by Beth Sandland (an awesome human/blogger, check her out). Every month a new book is selected following a poll, which is accessible to all and available to read on the kindle app (sign up to Amazon Kindle Unlimited with a free trial). This months book was The Flat Share by Beth O’Leary. Then at the end of the month an online discussion is scheduled in the group.
For my favourite wellbeing and self help books (and podcasts too!), visit my bookshelf. Alternatively read the Current Best Selling Books on Amazon. My favourite read of the year has to be Where The Crawdads Sing!
Cooking and baking
Whilst stuck at home, it is important to eat foods that both nourish your body and your mind. For many people (including myself), meals will become a key part of the day, so they should be healthy and enjoyable.
Mix up your day with breakfast in bed, ‘make at the table’ meals or a Raclette if you have one. Turning your meal into a fun activity.
There are thousands of delicious simple recipes just a few clicks away online. For my favourite indulgent but easy summery dessert, try my No Bake Strawberry Cheesecake Cups recipe. So get cooking, good looking!

Home DIY
Dear Husbands who have promised your other halves that you will get round to those jobs soon – “soon” has arrived my friend!
If you are a home owner, you will have a list of DIY jobs as long as your arm. If you can get hold of the supplies (I know some things can be tricky to get online right now) then now is the perfect opportunity to get those bits done and even make fun activities out of it.
Improving your home and your environment, which you are now stuck in for most hours of the day, is also great for mental health. We are planning to paint a big wall in our little house, just to change up our environment and give us a fun activity to get stuck into. Stick the radio on, and get DIY-ing!
Start a side hustle
Whilst now might not be the best time to start a business, if you always wanted a little side hustle of your own, use the time to start brainstorming. If you have a skill you would like to make money from or do more often, start researching, creating a business plan, developing a brand and online presence. You can do it!
Group video call with friends and family
Want to chat with multiple family members and friends at once? Missing your family dinners, or drinks round a friends house? Use a group video calling app such as Skype or Facebook Messenger to chat together and play games.
For less technology savvy family members, you can send a link to join a Skype call without the need for an app.
Fitness Challenge
Gather your friends (virtually of course) and create a bit of competition with your own fitness challenge. For example, a set number of squats each day, a steps challenge around the home, or create a routine to complete daily. Make it as fun as you can, with prizes along the way for the most committed challenger!
Plan gifts for the year
Now this is what I call being productive! I love giving gifts to friends and family which I just know they are going to love. Input all your friends and family members birthdays into a calendar, and start planning their birthday and Christmas gifts. Maybe even make some of them from scratch (see creative hobbies above).
When the time comes to buy a gift, you will be grateful to past you for putting so much thought into this when you had the time.
Virtual Pub Quiz
One of the best ideas my best friend has ever had! Who needs pub quizzes when you can make your own for your friends to complete over Skype or Facebook messenger ? If there are a large group of you, give each person or couple a category to create a round. That way everyone gets to be quiz master and answer questions. Here are some category ideas:
Picture rounds
- Identify the celebrity – provide only half or distorted photos
- Name the baby – everyone provides a baby photo of themselves
- Spot the destination – photos of famous destinations to name
- Guess the animal – provide only half or distorted photos
- Name the logo – photos of logos without the company name
Music rounds
- Identify the 2020 hit – play the first 5 seconds of a recent song intro or chorus
- Name that backwards song – play a clip of a song backwards (find on Youtube)
- Guess the artist – play a clip of a song
- Name that movie – play a clip of a well-known song from a movie
Question rounds
- News headlines of the year – Provide the headline with a word missing
- Donald Trump tweets – Real or no real tweets
- General knowledge
- Themed rounds – nature, movies, TV, music, geography, transport, celebrity, science or transport.

I hope you give these fun activities a go and have fun whether quizzing, painting or baking! If you have any other fun ideas to try out at home, please get in touch so I can share them with the tribe.
