Escape Busy Life And Explore The Beautiful South Of England

Set your out of office, switch off your phone, and take that much needed break with a UK holiday. Just because we can’t all jet off to some idyllic paradise abroad right now, doesn’t mean we can’t escape the daily stresses of life. A few days away is just what I need to unwind, ground myself and return to work/life ready to give 100% again. And you don’t even need to leave the UK to find bliss.

I might scream if a butterfly flies near my face, run away when I hear the hint of a wasps buzz, and break out in a leg rash if I sit on grass – but I truly love nature. There is nothing better for my mental health than leaving civilisation as I know it behind, and heading to the country or coast. That moment when you feel the stress, adrenaline and general bad vibes drain away through your feet, your lungs fill with fresh air, your skin absorbs the suns vitamins and your brain fog clears – that’s what I call bliss.

So where are these magical places in the South of England I hear you ask? I’ve done the research so you don’t have to! I’ve included some of my favourite places to visit and some I’m dying to explore one day. The current situation has taught me many things, but rather importantly that we don’t need to fly abroad to have incredible unique experiences. You can stay local, support our economy, and make small business owners do happy dances every time you book or purchase something!

West Sussex

If you follow me on Instagram, you can probably work out that this is my home turf. I feel incredibly blessed to have grown up in such a beautiful part of England, where you can enjoy historic towns, vibrant country side and glorious beaches. Twenty-six years living in West Sussex and I’m still finding new places to explore.

Country walks

West Sussex has an abundance of beautiful country walks. My favourite is a stroll along the River Arun in the historical town of Arundel. If you are a local or a frequent visitor, then you might know of the discreet pathway starting in the main carpark on Mill Road. This takes you along the river where you can stop for a picnic and appreciate the magnificent view of Arundel Castle. The path will take you to the Black Rabbit Pub, before you swing a left and continue to Swanbourne Lake – my second favourite place to walk. Swanbourne Lake, surrounded by rolling hills to explore, is bustling with nature. Meander around the lake, and if you’re feeling fit, climb the hill on the left to reach Arundel park. Other breathtakingly beautiful walks include Kingley Vale Trail, Bosham Quay, and Chichester Canal.

Quiet Coastline

West Sussex is not short of picturesque coastline, pebbled havens and white sandy dunes. To escape the crowds reflected in the news, head to the quiet simple spots only locals flock to. Really, they do exist! Check out Pagham, Aldwick or Climping beaches. Enjoy the peaceful echo of the waves, maybe watch a wind surfer or two and feel the wet sand melt away beneath your feet.

Activities

Whatever you enjoy to do, there is something for everyone in this neck of the woods. I remember my family taking me snake spotting in the woods at Goodwood. We had hours of fun and even caught a few glimpses of a Black Adder. If snakes aren’t for you, book a Kayaking trip along the River Arun, row a boat on Swanbourne Lake, walk with Alpacas or view West Sussex from the air with a Goodwood flying experience. Don’t forget to visit one of the many historic buildings or National Trust sites.

Devon

Another piece of the planet close to my heart. My family recently quit the city life for a self sufficient lifestyle on a small holding in Mid-Devon. My fiancé and I now love to leave the stresses of adult life behind and head to Devon for a few days to unwind and reset. Swapping our house for a wooden solar panelled cabin tucked within some trees on their lake, we help out on the land, enjoy blissful breaks at the local white sandy beaches and just absorb the peacefulness of nature.

Lakemoor Devon (opening to public in 2021)

Country Walks

Devon is home to vast countryside, with endless walks of stunning scenery. To avoid this post being equally endless, here are a just a few gems to check out. Bystock Pools has it all – lakes laced with lily-pads, meadows abundant with wildflowers and various species of colourful dragon flies dancing above the water. If you like your water a little faster flowing, visit the Lydford Gorge Waterfall Trail (tickets required). Here you can see the epic 28.2 metre high waterfall before embarking on a path along the old Great Western Railway route. Alternatively journey to East Devon for a walk from Branscombe to Beer. Here you will be rewarded with stunning coastal and country views.

Quiet Coastline

Devon is renowned for it’s stretching coastlines, rippling sand dunes and towering cliffs. Many become a hive of activity in the summer, but a few coves and hidden spots have remained a secret protected from tourists. Moor Sands (also known as Vernick’s Cove) has remained unspoilt due to its tricky access, reached by a steep climb aided by a rope ladder – a secluded cove well worth the effort. If you prefer a little more sand and a little less rope ladder, Lannoncombe Beach is another hidden gem. Perfect for little explorers, avoid the crowds, investigate the rock pools and build castles in the sand. For cliffs and rocky terrain, check out Gammons Head Beach and Woody Bay.

Activities

Can you really go to Devon and not experience the feeling of riding a wave? Hire everything you need to body board or surf, and even sign up for a surfing lesson. Take a boat to Lundy Island (when open) to see the magnificent Puffins, learn how bees make honey at Quince Honey Farm or meet the furry residents at Dartmoors Otter Sanctuary.

The New Forest

If you are in search of wildlife, then you won’t be disappointed by a trip to The New Forest. One of 15 National Parks in England, it’s renowned for the 5000 approx. ponies and 200 approx. donkeys which roam free around the National Park, among other creatures such as deer, pigs, snakes and rare birds.

Country Walks

Pack a picnic and choose from the many beautiful walks throughout The New Forest. Just be prepared you may have to hide your sandwiches from the free roaming horses! Frolic through fields of vibrant purple heather in The New Forest’s unofficial capital, Lyndhurst. The Lyndhurst Heath Circular is a manageable 3.5 mile walk, best visited in the late summer to experience the route in full bloom. If your legs can take a longer distance, walk from Lyndhurst to Brockenhurst and experience two beautiful quaint villages in The New Forest.

Quiet Coastline

Many, including myself, will be surprised to find out The New Forest has coastline! Even more of a surprise, is a secret beach frequented by the local ponies, in Tanners Lane just 3 miles west of Lymington. Fairly quiet during the week, this shingle beach is pretty wild with few facilities. Alternatively explore nature at Keyhaven harbour, where you can spot shrimp, sea-anemone and various breeds of wading birds.

Activities

Swap four wheels for two and explore The New Forest by bike, get to know the locals and try horse riding, or adventure from the treetops with a high wire assault course! Then grab your paddles and journey down the Beaulieu River Nature Reserve for a kayaking lesson.

Lol I have the same relationship with nature! Even though it tries to mess with me (particularly with bugs) I still love it. Great read, I would love to visit here one day!
