“I never knew making burgers at home was this easy!”
Takeaways and fast foods have always been a guilty pleasure of mine. Going out for dinner or ordering in was a treat, often a reward for an achievement at school (or simply that it was a Friday!). As I have gotten older, I have grown a love of cooking with fresh ingredients. My recipes have none of the nasties and unknown ingredients that hide away in those takeaway meals, and with minimal ingredients it won’t break the budget.
Like surprises?
These beef burgers have a cheesy surprise in the middle, which creates a moistness to the whole patty, and a delicious bubble of cheesy goodness in the center. (I honestly can’t think of anything better)

Once you give this recipe a try, you will wonder why you haven’t made burgers from scratch before! There are a few tips and tricks in this recipe which help to make the process easier, tidier and fail proof. Be sure to check these tips out before getting started making your fakeaway burger and fries.
Tips & Tricks
1. Soaking the chopped sweet potato in cold water first helps to clean the excess starch. Dry the chopped sweet potato really well before cooking and to remove any remaining water. This will reduce the chance of soggy fries.
2. Using a colander to coat the fries with the oil, garlic and paprika will get every single fry covered. This will help them get nice and evenly crispy when cooking.
3. Spread the fries out on the tray ensuring none of them are overlapping and they can evenly cook.

4. Once your patties are made, put them in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. The longer the better. This firms up the burgers and reduces the chance of them splitting in the pan. A split burger means you can say goodbye to that delicious cheese… sad.
5. Cook the burgers on a steady medium heat, so the center cooks without burning the outside. Cover the pan with a splatter guard or lid if you can to help keep the heat in – we want that cheese nice a hot!
That’s it – you’re ready to go.

Juicy Beef Burger and Baked Sweet Potato Fries Recipe

Ditch the fast-food takeaways and have fakeaway burger and fries at home! Make these juicy cheese burgers, a family favourite. This simple recipe makes four cheese filled beef patties with baked sweet potato fries. Nasty free and budget friendly!
Ingredients
3 large sweet potatoes
Coconut oil
1 garlic clove chopped
1 tsp paprika
500g organic beef mince
1 onion finely chopped
1 egg
50g grated cheddar cheese
50g grated mozzarella
4 burger buns
1 gem Lettuce
1 large Salad Tomato
Optional Heinz Burger Sauce
Directions
- Peel the sweet potatoes and chop into evenly sized fries. Pop the fries into a sieve or colander which can be rested in a bowl or sink of fresh cold water for 30 minutes. (Pre-heat your oven to reach 230 degrees).
- Meanwhile, mix the mince, chopped onion and egg together in a bowl. On a plate or plastic chopping board, make 8 flat round patties. These should be roughly 1cm thick and 7cm wide. (You will be using two of these to make each burger).
- Mix grated cheddar and grated mozzarella together. Take a small handful and squish in your palm. Place the cheese ball in the center of four of the burgers. Place a plain burger on top of each, and mould the edges together until you have sealed burgers.
- Place your four cheese-filled burgers in the fridge to firm up for at least 30 minutes.
- In a small dish melt 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, 1 crushed garlic clove and 1 teaspoon of paprika. Stir well. Once the sweet potato fries have soaked for at least 30 minutes, remove the colander from the water and shake well. Transfer the fries onto a clean tea towel to pat dry. Dry the colander and return the fries to it, pour the oil mix over and shake over a sink or bin until every fry is covered in the coating.
- Place a sheet of grease-proof paper over a baking tray. Tip the coated fries onto the tray and spread out ensuring no fries are overlapping. Place in the oven for 20-25 minutes, turning the fries after 10 minutes and checking often to ensure they are cooking evenly.
- Meanwhile, melt a little coconut oil in a non-stick pan, and cook the burgers on a medium heat for around 3 minutes on each side. Be careful when turning the burgers so they don’t split. Once cooked, place the cooked burgers on some kitchen or grease-proof paper to soak up excess oil.
- Once crispy, remove the fries from the oven and leave to sit for a minute. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and a little extra paprika (optional).
- Toast your burger buns and layer with salad and any other chosen fillings. Place the burger on top, add sauce and your top bun. Serve with your homemade sweet potato fries.
